On Saturday, December 12, performer, teacher and composer Lorinda Jones will perform music on mountain dulcimer and Irish harp from 11:00 – 2:00 at the Kentucky Artisan Center at Berea. Lorinda will be accompanied by Greta Gillmeister on the Irish flute and Penny whistle.
Nationally recognized performer, recording artist, and teacher of the mountain dulcimer and folk harp, Lorinda Jones is a lifelong resident of Kentucky. As a juried member of the Kentucky Arts on Tour Directory, she performs across the state, region, and nation to promote the folk music of Kentucky, and its roots in Appalachia and the British Isles.
Lorinda has numerous CDs and Books to her credit, including books by Mel Bay Publications. With degrees in music education, music therapy, and community counseling, Lorinda has used her music in a variety of settings and is currently working in the school and medical setting as a music therapist, in addition to her continued private teaching and performing.
Greta Gillmeister began playing the Boehm flute in the second grade. Throughout school, she won solo competitions and was selected to perform in master classes with such flutists as Jim Walker, Walfrid Kujala, and Michel Debost. She has shared the musical stage with James Galway in a performance of the "Pied Piper Fantasy" and has degrees in both flute performance and music therapy. She currently is concentrating on performing on the Penny whistle and Irish flute, in addition to her school and medical work as a music therapist.
This duo from Kentucky has been performing together for the past 5 years, exploring their Kentucky roots music back to it's origin from the Scottish and Irish people. The music is an obvious fit for the whistle, harp, and flute, but the mountain dulcimer will sound right at home on the reels, hornpipes and polkas intricately arranged in the Irish style.
