Kentucky Commission on Women Seeks Nominations for Annual Kentucky Women Remembered
Frankfort, KY- The Kentucky Commission on Women (KCW) is currently seeking nominations of outstanding Kentucky Women for the Kentucky Women remembered watercolor portraits in the Capitol. Nominations for Kentucky Women Remembered must be submitted by December 5, 2008. Nomination forms are available on the KCW web site at www.women.ky.gov.
Kentucky Women Remembered began in 1978 and consists of portraits depicting exceptional women in Kentucky’s history. The exhibit found a permanent home in the West Wing of the Capitol in 1996 after many years of traveling around the Commonwealth. Thousands of visitors to our state capitol view the portraits each year and learn about the heritage and contributions of Kentucky women.
Kentuckians nominate women to be honored and, from those nominations, KCW commission members select the women to be added to the exhibit. The newest portraits are unveiled by Governor and Mrs. Beshear at a formal ceremony held in the Capitol Rotunda in March 2009.
Nominees must have been born in, or spent a significant part of their lives in Kentucky and may be living or deceased. Nominees’ actions or achievements should have impact outside their communities or should have increased the status of women in some significant manner. This exhibit honors extraordinary Kentucky women and their lifetime achievements. Therefore, nominees should have reached the pinnacle of their careers or other chosen pursuits.
