FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 7, 2005) -- The Kentucky Division of Water has reissued the Kentucky Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (KPDES) permit for Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.  This permit regulates discharges of storm water runoff containing residual aircraft and runway deicing fluids into Gunpowder and Elijahs creeks.

Lloyd Cress, Commissioner of the Department for Environmental Protection, said, “These new effluent limitations and increased monitoring requirements put the Department for Environmental Protection in a position to address this long-standing environmental problem in Northern Kentucky.”

The reissued permit imposes new requirements on the airport, including more stringent effluent limitation and monitoring requirements designed to eliminate the impairment of the receiving streams and achieve compliance with Kentucky’s water quality standards.  The permit also imposes new requirements for continuous monitoring of the discharge into the streams.  Additionally, the permit provides for periodic biological assessments of fish and macroinvertebrate communities in the receiving streams to confirm that the stream impairment has been successfully addressed.  The permit will become effective April 1, 2005.
