Governor Beshear Announces Sun Products to Expand in Bowling Green
Company adding new warehouse and distribution center, investing approximately
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (June 22, 2010) – Gov. Steve Beshear today joined company and community leaders in Bowling Green to announce The Sun Products Corporation, a leading North American provider of laundry-care products, will invest approximately $10.77 million to construct a 1.4 million square-foot distribution center. The company, which currently employs nearly 1,000 people in Bowling Green, plans to consolidate its nine existing facilities that are located in or around Bowling Green into a single, larger warehouse and distribution center.
“Kentucky is pleased to have a nationally known company, such as The Sun Products Corporation, make continued investments in its South Central Kentucky operations,” said Gov. Beshear. “The company’s approximately $10.77 million investment in Bowling Green will have a positive economic impact on the entire region, and will help to secure the Commonwealth as the home of Sun Products for years to come.”
Sun Products is partnering with a third-party developer to finance and construct the new state-of-the-art distribution center in the South Central Kentucky Industrial Park in Bowling Green. In addition to construction costs, Sun Product’s investment will include a new warehouse management system as well as material handling equipment necessary to support customer shipping operations.
“We are pleased to have chosen Bowling Green as the home for our new distribution center,” said Blair Hawley, senior vice president of logistics and distribution at Sun Products. “The Commonwealth of Kentucky is a valued business partner and the success of this project is a tribute to working together to generate opportunities that benefit the local economy and community, and that support our company’s vision for growth.”
Sun Products was established in September 2008, by the merger of Unilever’s North American fabric-care business and Huish Detergents Inc. The company’s product portfolio includes well-known brands in the laundry and dish-care market, including Wisk®, all®, Sunlight® and Snuggle®, as well as many laundry and dish-care private-label brands for retailers.
“We are excited to announce that Sun Products will be expanding in Bowling Green, Warren County,” said Warren County Judge Executive Michael Buchanon. “This expansion is a welcome addition to our community, and we look forward to watching them grow.”
“We appreciate Sun Products’ substantial addition to South Central Kentucky as this announcement brings new economic investment to the region,” said Bowling Green Mayor Elaine Walker. “The city of Bowling Green and Warren County were happy to work with Sun Products on this project, and we’re eager to watch this company expand.”
The Kentucky Economic Development Finance Authority preliminarily approved tax benefits for Sun Products up to $630,000 through the Kentucky Enterprise Initiative Act, an incentive program that allows approved companies to recoup Kentucky sales and use tax on the cost of construction materials, building fixtures and equipment used for research and development.
