Secretary Grimes Continues Commitment to Civic Engagement: Announces 25th Annual Essay & Slogan Contest
The 25th annual Secretary of State Essay and Slogan Contest is underway, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes announced today. Grimes encourages all eligible students to enter submissions. The contest addresses voter-related issues and its goal is to expand civic awareness of students who will soon be eligible to vote in Kentucky's local, state, and federal elections.
"The Essay and Slogan Contest is a wonderful opportunity for students to get engaged early in our democratic system," said Grimes. "Statistics are showing a trend of decreasing voter participation among the youngest demographics, so, as Chief Advocate for Civic Engagement, I encourage all students and teachers to demonstrate a commitment to active citizenship by participating in this Contest."
Students in grades 6-8 are invited to participate in the voter slogan portion of the Contest, and students in grades 9-12 may take part in the essay portion. The first, second, and third place winners in the Slogan Contest will receive a cash award worth $1000, $600, and $400, respectively. In the Essay Contest, a first place prize of $1000 will be awarded for each high school grade level.
In addition to the Office of the Secretary of State, the contest is sponsored and monetary prizes are provided by KEA and KEA Retired, Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, the Kentucky Department of Education, the University of Kentucky Scripps Howard First Amendment Center and the EKU Center for Appalachian Regional Engagement and Stewardship (CARES). The University of Kentucky also will assist in judging the essay portion of the Contest.
"I am very grateful to our partners for their sponsorship of this great program. These excellent corporate citizens make it possible to recognize and reward the outstanding achievements of Kentucky’s future voters and leaders," said Grimes.
Prompts, rules, and entry forms for the Essay and Slogan Contest are available on the Secretary of State’s website at http://www.sos.ky.gov/contests. All guidelines must be met for any entry to be considered by contest judges, and all entries must be electronically submitted by 5 p.m. (EST) on December 2, 2013, or postmarked by that date.
