Secretary of State to Establish Mobile Field Office in Eastern Kentucky

During the week of April 23, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes and members of her business filings and elections staff will operate a mobile field office in counties affected by the March 2 tornado outbreak. Last month Grimes, along with Maryellen Allen, Executive Director of the State Board of Elections, and Noel Caldwell, Director of Business Filings, traveled to the area to deliver donated supplies and meet with county officials and business owners. During the extended return trip, Grimes will set up a mobile field office in Morgan and Magoffin counties, which will provide on-site business services and election information.

The mobile field office will be in Morgan County on April 23, 24 and 25 at 191 West Main Street in West Liberty. It will be in Magoffin County on April 26 and 27 next to the Magoffin County Health Department, 132 East Mountain Parkway, in Salyersville. The mobile field office will be open regular business hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Most business services will be available on-site, including:

• Filing articles of incorporation or organization
• Filing articles of dissolution
• Filing annual reports (due June 30, 2012)
• Changing name, registered agent, or principal address

“Businesses in Morgan and Magoffin counties are starting the long rebuilding process,” observed Grimes, “and as the Commonwealth’s Chief Business Officer, I am committed to ensuring they have all the resources necessary from my office to take the next steps.”

Citizens also may visit the mobile field office to check their voter registration status and find out where they will vote in the May 22 Primary Election. “In addition to many homes, the March 2 storms destroyed precinct voting locations and election equipment,” said Grimes, who is the Chair of the State Board of Elections and the Commonwealth’s Chief Election Official. “We must take special care to make sure the integrity of our election process is preserved and that all eligible citizens have the opportunity to exercise the important right to vote.” 

Representatives John Will Stacy from Morgan County and John Short from Magoffin County spoke about what the mobile field unit will mean to their communities. Stacy noted the recovery effort “is not a sprint, it’s a marathon,” and he thanked Secretary Grimes for “bringing what you can do to my community so that people know they are not alone.” Short noted the need in the wake of a disaster for people to pull together and said he is grateful “we have a Secretary of State who will do something like this.” 

The mobile field office is being made possible by businesses and universities across the state, who have graciously partnered with the Secretary of State’s office to provide supplies necessary to operate the remote office.
