Kentucky State Parks Participate In National Public Lands Day Sept. 27

 

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Anyone interested in volunteering to help clean and improve a Kentucky State Park will have an opportunity to help as part the 15th annual Public Lands Day on Sept. 27.

 

National Public Lands Day began in 1994 with three federal agencies and 700 volunteers. Last year, some 110,000 volunteers worked in 1,300 locations in every state. The purpose of this day is to keep the promise of the Civilian Conservation Corps alive and to preserve and protect America’s natural heritage.

 

Here is a listing of state park events for Public Lands Day. All are on Sept. 27 unless otherwise noted. Call the park for details. All times are local.

 

 

Rough River State Resort Park

Location:  450 Lodge Road, Falls of Rough, KY

Join Rough River as the park celebrates National Public Lands Day and help cleanup the lakeshore. After the cleanup, for those who participated, there will be a live band for your entertainment, lunch will be provided and there will be prizes given away.  The cleanup will begin around 8 a.m. and the festivities will wrap up around 2-2:30 pm.

General Butler State Resort Park @ the Butler-Turpin State Historic Site

This will be the second year the Butler-Turpin State Historic House at General Butler State Resort Park has participated in National Public Lands Day. In keeping with last year's programming, school groups along with scouts have planned activities during the week prior to Sept. 27. On the national date we will conduct the following:

 

Volunteers will help with old growth plant removal, tree planting, grounds clean up, trail repair and Adopt A Highway (the historic house has a section of Hwy 227 from the intersection of U.S. 42/Hwy 227 that is approximately 2 miles long ending just past the Kentucky National Guard - Carrollton, Kentucky for trash pickup.)

Emergency Preparedness “Day for Kids”

9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Lakeview Shelter and Sycamore Shelter

Pre-K to 5th graders will enjoy and benefit from learning what to do to stay safe and how to be prepared for emergencies.  Henderson’s American Red Cross Cardinal Chapter volunteers will present age-appropriate classes in safety and cleanliness (pre-K-6), Masters of Disaster-Preparation for Disaster (pre-K-5), First-aid for Children Today (K-3), and Basic Aid Training (3rd-5th grade).  Emergency vehicles will be present for children to visit, and an Emergency Response Vehicle will serve hot dots and chips from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  For more information please contact Julie McDonald at 270-826-2247 or juliea.mcdonald@ky.gov or Ladonna Scott (270) 826-2775 or ladonnaarc@ccol.net.  This is a free program.

 

Kenlake State Resort Park

9-10 a.m.: Planting Mums, Pansies, etc. for the fall 

10:30-11:30 a.m.: Make homemade hummingbird feeders

 

Required equipment:  A sack lunch, good hiking boots, several bottles of water and a backpack to carry your equipment in. Optional equipment: Sunscreen, camera, sunglasses, Binoculars.

 

Blue Licks State Resort Park

The park is seeking volunteers for Sept. 27 (and various other dates throughout the year) to assist in keeping the park beautiful by working on an 18th Century Trading Fort.  Volunteers will be picking up litter around Tanner Station and various park trails, planting trees, and helping with other Tanner Station upkeep, such as chinking the walls of the fort.  Interested volunteers (individual and/or organizations) must register in advance by calling Paul Tierney at 800-443-7008. 

 

Please wear appropriate footwear, such as hiking boots or tennis shoes, and bring work gloves to help clean up around our park.  Trash bags will be distributed and areas will be designated around the park for volunteer work.  All participants will receive free Pioneer Museum passes, free Mini Golf passes, and be entered into a drawing to win two free meals at Hidden Waters Restaurant. 

 

Taylorsville Lake State Park

Join them in the Taylorsville Lake Clean Sweep administered by the Taylorsville Lake Conservation Association.  It is based from the picnic area at the State Park.  Volunteers are charged with removing garbage and other debris from the lake and shorelines.  They will be transported by car and boat to areas needing attention.  The event begins at 8 a.m. and lunch will be provided along with a T-shirt & other door prizes at noon.  For more information or to pre-register please contact (502) 477-8882.  This is the Army Corps of Engineers contact for Taylorsville Lake.

 

 Fort Boonesborough State Park

Lake Barkley State Resort Park

Barren River Lake State Resort Park

Volunteers will help pickup trash along the shoreline of the 10,000 acre Barren River Lake either from boat or land.
