DAWSON SPRINGS, Ky. – Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park wants to liven up your winter weekends with a rook tournament on Jan. 9-11, 2009 and a landscape oil painting weekend Jan. 23-25, 2009.

The round robin rook tournament begins the night of Friday Jan. 9 and runs through Saturday night Jan. 10. Early bird registration on or before Jan. 2 is $20 per team plus a new deck of rook cards. Regular registration costs $25 per team plus a new deck of rook cards.

Play begins at 7 p.m. Friday, and the park will offer a special lodging discount of two nights for the price of one during the tournament. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishing teams.

Landscape oil painting weekend Jan. 23-25 will feature instruction by Walter Kunkle, who trained under noted painting teacher Bob Ross. He will demonstrate his talents Friday evening and then instruct classes on Saturday and Sunday. Participants will learn the wet on wet method of oil painting by creating their own 16 inch by 20 inch landscape.

Fees are $65 for one painting class and the Friday night program or $120 for two painting classes and Friday night. The classes have a maximum enrollment of 15 per class, so you should sign up early. Ask about a lodging discount when registering.
