Big Bone Lick State Park To Take Part in Great Outdoor Weekend Sept. 22-23

UNION, Ky. – Big Bone Lick State Park will participate in the Great Outdoor Weekend, Sept. 22-23.

Great Outdoor Weekend is an outdoor recreation and nature awareness program in the Cincinnati area.

Tour the trails at Big Bone Lick State Park, the birthplace of American vertebrate paleontology. Paleontologists, archaeologists and historians from the Cincinnati Museum Center and the Friends of Big Bone will provide interpretive commentary on the Ice Age, Native Americans, and fossil mammals, as well as the geology and native vegetation of the area. Bring your artifacts and fossils to be identified by our staff. Guests can also visit an 1800's-era campsite.

Tours will begin beside the visitor center. Tours and other programs will be conducted noon to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.

Big Bone Lick State Park has picnic areas, a 62-site campground with electricity, grills, water, restrooms, showers, a pool and small grocery. There are sports fields, and the indoor-outdoor museum has collections of bones from ancient creatures once attracted to the mineral springs of the area. On the grounds are life-size replicas of mastodons and bison. There is also a live bison herd at the park.
