Interactive maps highlight recommended alternate routes for I-64 travelers

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 16, 2011) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has created a Web page with interactive maps to help travelers navigate Interstate-64 during the closure of the Sherman Minton Bridge between Louisville and New Albany, Ind.

The Web page features three interactive maps that illustrate recommended alternative routes. The link is www.transportation.ky.gov/sherman-minton-bridge.

“We want to provide information that will help motorists during this period in which the Sherman Minton Bridge is closed,” Kentucky Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock said. “Meantime, we are working with our partners at the Indiana Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration to complete testing and repairs to get the bridge safely reopened as soon as possible.”

Under a bi-state agreement, Indiana has maintenance responsibility for the Sherman Minton Bridge. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels ordered the bridge’s closure on Friday, Sept. 9, after inspectors found a crack in a critical location.
