UNBRIDLED SPIRIT LICENSE PLATE - Design is Finalist for National Award

FRANKFORT, KY (February 20, 2006) - Kentucky’s new "Unbridled Spirit" standard-issue license plate is a finalist for the Automobile License Plate Collectors Association’s (ALPCA) 2005 Best Plate award.  The plate is one of twelve finalists for the Best Plate award. Voting is currently underway and will be completed in early March.

 “The Unbridled Spirit plate offers a phenomenal opportunity to showcase the unbridled spirit brand,” stated Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert.  “The plate is clean, striking and emphasizes Kentucky’s unbridled spirit.  We are very excited about the new license plate.  We feel it clearly represents the brand that the citizens of the commonwealth endorse.”

New plates are judged on the basis of attractive design, legibility and how well the plate promotes the issuing state or province. The state or province whose plate is selected as the best of 2005 will be recognized at a special ceremony at the capitol, where ALPCA President Michael Naughton will present a special plaque to motor vehicle officials.

Last year, Oklahoma’s State Parks special issue plate was named Best Plate. ALPCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of license plate collecting and research, and the exchange of information and plates, as well as all fraternal benefits of sharing a common hobby interest with others throughout the world.

Kentucky's former “smiley face” plate won ALPCA’s Best Plate award in 2003. 

Starting with the Northwest Territories polar bear in 1970, ALPCA members have selected the best new plate for each of the last 24 years. The club was founded in 1954 and is incorporated under the laws of the State of New Hampshire.
