FRANKFORT, KY  - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is proud to host the 2005 AASHTO Subcommittee on Construction July 31st – August 5th at the Galt House, West Tower, in Louisville, Kentucky.   

“This conference provides an opportunity for AASHTO participants to discuss issues relative to the construction field,” stated acting Secretary Bill Nighbert.  “The Cabinet welcomes attendees from all states, Puerto Rico and Canada as we discuss the enormous economic potential which the field of construction holds for not only the Commonwealth of Kentucky, but nationwide.  Construction plays a vital role in the Cabinet’s vision of future economic growth and overall quality of life.”   

Representatives from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada are invited to attend this conference.  American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing highway and transportation departments. 

            AASHTO represents all five transportation modes: air, highways, public transportation, rail and water. Its primary goal is to foster the development, operation and maintenance of an integrated national transportation system. 

The Subcommittee’s responsibilities are as follows: 

  • prepare guide specifications for construction
  • manual of construction practices and methods
  • operate a forum for the exchange of information regarding such procedures
  • effect liaison with other operating subcommittees in a concerted effort to reduce construction cost
  • promote quality in construction
  • provide coordinated plans and specifications
  • mitigate traffic impacts
  • advocate environmental sensitivity in construction
  • promote safety for both the construction workers and the traveling public
  • encourage economical electronically supported business practices for construction related programs
  • promote the best practices for administering construction contracts with all stakeholders.
