Highway District to upgrade signal system along Northern
LEXINGTON, KY (February 8, 2005)—The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Department of Highways is scheduled to begin upgrading traffic signals along the Georgetown Bypass from the intersection with KY 32 (Champion Way) extending to the northern termini at I-75 (Delaplain), beginning Monday, February 14, 2005. The upgrade will include the installation of 5-section signal heads as well as the new Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs.
"Governor Fletcher and Secretary Bailey are committed to maximizing the efficiency of our resources to provide the citizens of the Commonwealth the transportation system they need," said Amos Hubbard, Jr., Chief District Engineer, District Seven. "This initiative gives travelers a greater benefit for little cost."
The upgrades, which will occur at 9 locations (see-attached map & list), will allow the Cabinet to incorporate "Protected/Permitted" left turn phasing along the bypass. With this phasing, motorists may make left turn movements, from the Bypass, under green arrow conditions (Protected) as well as during the main line green ball condition (Permitted), however they are required to yield to oncoming traffic. During the permitted phase, motorists turning left from the bypass no longer have a red arrow prohibiting left turn movements except during the side street phase when a red ball will be indicated.
These changes are necessary to improve the efficiency of the traffic signal system along this section of the Georgetown Bypass. As demands and traffic volumes continue to increase on our highway systems the Cabinet is focusing on innovative ways to improve traffic flow and efficiency to provide a better quality of life for the citizens of the Commonwealth. When used correctly, the "protected/permitted" left turn phasing is much more effective at meeting the demands being placed on our highway systems and is well received by motorists as it often decreases the delay incurred at intersections.
All work will be performed by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet forces and is scheduled weather permitting. The upgrade is anticipated to take 1-2 weeks and lane closures can be expected during this time. Appropriate signs, barrels, and other traffic control devices will be in place to assist motorists.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet asks motorists to be aware of the closures and to utilize safe driving habits throughout the work zone.
