LEXINGTON, KY (June 10, 2005)— As part of Governor Ernie Fletcher’s vision to provide a safe and reliable transportation system, acting Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert announces that the resurfacing of Main Street and Newtown Pike is scheduled to begin Monday, June 13, 2005

"The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is committed to ensuring the Commonwealth's prosperity and safe mobility by paving the way forward full speed ahead," said acting Secretary Nighbert. "The Governor has directed our cabinet to improve efficiency and maximize the value taxpayers get out of every dollar. We are using those guiding principals on projects both large and small."

This project will include the resurfacing of Main Street from Midland Avenue to Newtown Pike as well as Newtown Pike from Main Street to Stanton Way with resurfacing work beginning on Newtown Pike on Monday.  The milling and resurfacing of Main Street is scheduled to begin after the July 4th Holiday weekend.  The $1,378,230 project has been awarded to Central Kentucky Asphalt of Lexington, Kentucky and has a scheduled completion date of August 30, 2005.  All major work will occur between the hours of 6:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m., Monday through Friday.  Resurfacing work will be allowed 24 hours a day on weekends.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet asks that motorists who utilize street parking on Main Street and Newtown Pike remove their vehicles by 5:00 p.m. each day.  Vehicles utilizing street parking in this area are subject to be towed at owner’s expense after 6:00 p.m.  Appropriate signs, barrels and variable message boards will be use to alert motorists of any closures.

Construction activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
