New Circle Road Cable Barrier System Successful in Preventing Cross-Over Accident

LEXINGTON, KY (August 3, 2007)—Earlier this morning the recently installed cable barrier system on New Circle Road received its first test, the outcome of which was a resounding success.

The newly installed system is credited with preventing a passenger car, traveling on the inner loop of New Circle Road between Nicholasville Road and Harrodsburg Road, from crossing the median into on-coming traffic.  In addition, the system which is designed to deflect upon impact prevented the people inside the vehicle from sustaining serious injury.

“Staff with the Transportation Cabinet work daily to improve safety on our highways, it is the priority that has been regularly emphasized by Governor Fletcher and Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert,” said Commissioner of Highway Marc Williams.  “This accident and the effectiveness of the new cable median is an example of how these efforts pay off.”

The $2.4 million project was awarded by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in April of this year and is being conducted by the George B. Stone Company.  The project includes the installation of the cable barrier system along the median of the unsignalized portion of New Circle Road between the Richmond Road and Old Frankfort Pike Interchanges.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet anticipates that the project will be complete within the next 2 – 3 weeks.
