Governor Ernie Fletcher and the Kentucky Transportation Announces $5.5 Million for US 42 Improvements in Carroll County

Covington, Kentucky – (October 19, 2005) – As part of Governor Ernie Fletcher and acting Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert’s vision of providing a safe and reliable transportation system, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announces that road improvements and a bridge replacement on US 42 in Carroll County has begun.

“The improvement project to US 42 is another example of our commitment to improving safety on our highways while making the necessary improvements that will increase the potential of future economic development opportunities and preserve the quality of life for citizens of Carroll County and for Northern Kentucky,” said Secretary Nighbert.

Hinkle Contracting Corporation, from Paris, Kentucky was awarded the project with their successful bid of $5,518,274.62 million.

The widening and reconstruction project of US 42 is from Burley Estates to 800 feet east of Four Mile Road for a distance of 1.3 mile. There will be three lanes, one northbound and one southbound with a continuous turning lane, and 12 foot paved shoulders.  The new section of roadway will also include curb, gutter and drainage improvements. The project will include wide gutters to allow for drainage improvements to this area. The eastern end of US 42 includes a bridge replacement of the Four Mile Creek Bridge.

Signage has been place and crews will begin utility relocation until the end of the construction season, November 30, 2005.  The project will resume in April, 2006 and construction crews will begin with the bridge replacement.

The project has an anticipated completion date of late fall of 2006.

Construction updates will be given weekly.  They will be sent out to media and posted on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District Six webpage in the Road Report link http://www.kytc.state.ky.us/D6/D6.htm

Motorists are asked to pay careful attention to warning signs alerting them of the roadwork and obey work zone speed limits where applicable.  Motorists are urged to use caution in work areas, and to be alert for flaggers, workers, and equipment which may block a portion of the roadway, and other items of concern in work zones.

Maintenance and construction activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions, emergencies, and other factors beyond the control of the Department of Highways.  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet appreciates your patience during the construction process.
