Construction of the US 25 bridge replacement and its approaches over the railroad in Williamstown will begin March 1.
“The new bridge and approaches are being constructed to replace the existing bridge,” said Rob Hans, Chief District Engineer for Department of Highways District 6 in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. “This in turn will provide safer passage for the people in Grant County and all those who travel this roadway.”
During construction, traffic will continue to use the existing bridge. Motorists are asked to use caution in the work zone.
The Haydon Bridge Co., of Springfield, was awarded the low bid contract for $5 million.
The new concrete structure will be built 60 feet west of the existing structure and will have sidewalks on both sides. Sunset Drive, located at the southern approach to the existing bridge, will be partially removed. A new James Street approach will be constructed and intersect James Street, providing access to Sunset Drive.
Park Drive will be reconstructed and will no longer go under the bridge. Its intersection with US 25 will be relocated to the east side of the highway.
Some utility work will begin in February in advance of the March 1 construction start. Foundation construction for the bridge piers is expected to begin in the spring. Completion of the project is expected by the end of summer 2011.
