Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert Along with State and Local Officials Dedicate the Opening of KY 19 in Bracken County

$14.4 Million to Make Road Safer

Covington, Kentucky-(November 9, 2005) –  Today the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Acting Secretary Bill Nighbert along with District 18 Senator Charlie Borders, District 70 State Representative Mitchel B. “Mike” Denham and Bracken County Judge Executive Leslie Newman were on hand to officially dedicate the completion of KY 19 in Bracken County.

Transportation Acting Secretary Bill Nighbert said, “The road construction of KY 19 involved two separate projects that combined cost $14.4 million.  It improved 7.2 miles with a new alignment and made the road wider.”  Nighbert continued, “These projects signify the vision of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, making our roads safe and reliable for all Kentuckians.”

State Senator Charlie Borders (R-Grayson) followed by saying, “Good roads and infrastructure are vital to the growth and success of our local communities, especially in our rural areas.  This major improvement will not only be beneficial to Augusta and Brooksville, but to all of Bracken County and the surrounding area.”  He continued saying, “I applaud our local officials and our elected state officials in working with the Transportation Cabinet to make these much needed improvements become reality.  I am confident that our “working together” attitude will continue to bring other such projects to our region.”

Mike Denham, State Representative (D-Maysville) added, “The improved KY 19 will greatly enhance the economic viability of Bracken County; it will be a tremendous asset to the citizens traveling between the cities of Brooksville and Augusta.”

Judge Executive of Bracken County, Leslie Newman said that “the new KY 19 will be a great improvement for the county.  Citizens will have greater access to the AA Highway and the road will greatly help our emergency services.”

There were two different projects involved with the new alignment of KY 19.  The first phase of construction began October 2001.  This 2.1 mile project began at KY 10 in Brooksville and ended at Locust Creek.  Elmo Greer and Sons of London, Kentucky were awarded the contract with a low bid of $5,530,000. It was completed May of 2003.  It is a typical section two lane rural.

The second phase or section was between the KY 875/Mount Zion Road and KY 8 in Augusta for 5.1 miles.  HG Mays Corporation from Frankfort, Kentucky was awarded the $8,990,000.00 million dollar contract.  This section began in March 2003 and was recently completed August 2005.  It is a typical section-2 lane rural.  This project includes a truck lane coming up the hill from Augusta to alleviate slower moving traffic.
