Final Section of Taylor Mill Road Widening Project in Kenton County Begins $24 million project will make a safer corridor
COVINGTON, KY – Construction of the last section of the Taylor Mill Road (new KY 16) widening project has begun in Kenton County. The 2-mile middle section extends from Sunbrite Drive to Blackstone Court in Taylor Mill. The entire new corridor will be 4.2 miles long when the project is completed.
“When this road widening project is completed, the new KY 16 will have greater capacity and improved traffic flow,” said, Rob Hans, Chief District Engineer for Department of Highways District 6, in Covington. “We also will have eliminated some dangerous curves and enhanced the intersections along the Taylor Mill Road.”
Haydon Bridge Co. Inc., of Springfield, Ky., was awarded the contract for $24 million.
At this time, construction crews are working off the highway, and no access points have changed. But it is important for motorists to use caution and watch for construction traffic that may enter and exit the roadway.
District 6 encourages motorists and residents who use this roadway to check the District 6 Road Report updates online at http://transportation.ky.gov/district-6/Pages/default.aspx, or “like” the District 6 Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/KYTC.District6. Knowing construction updates ahead of time can minimize frustration and delays.
When complete, some sections of the new roadway will have five lanes, including a continuous center turning lane. Elsewhere, it will have a raised grass median. The roadway also will have curbs, gutters and 7-foot-wide sidewalks. The alignments at the Senour Road and Hands Pike intersections have already been improved in the first phase.
The project got under way in spring 2011 with construction on the southern section, followed by construction on the northern section in summer 2012. To date, the cost of design, right of way, utilities and construction of all three sections totals $79.2 million.
The southern section, between Klette Road and Sunbrite Drive, will be completed in spring 2013. The northern section, from Blackstone Court to I-275, will be finished in summer 2013. The center section has a scheduled completion of spring 2016.
