Covington, Kentucky – (April 6, 2005) – As part of Governor Ernie Fletcher and acting Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert’s vision of providing a safe and reliable transportation system, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announces that the US 42 Bridge, also known as Old Prestonville Bridge, will soon undergo a cleaning and painting project.
"The cleaning and repainting of the US 42 bridge is another example of our commitment to improving safety on our highways while making the necessary improvements that will increase the potential of future economic development opportunities and preserve the quality of life for citizens of Carroll County and the city of Carrollton," said Governor Ernie Fletcher.
Bridges R Us Painting Co., Inc. from Campbell, Ohio was awarded the project with their successful bid of $1,477,623.00 million.
A marker next to the bridge commemorates that the Indian Bridge Company completed the original bridge in 1900. That bridge was replaced with the current bridge in the 1950’s.
The US 42/Old Prestonville Bridge is a three span truss bridge, which has nine steel girder, spans for the approaches. It crosses over the Kentucky River and New Castle Pike. The project will include a contained abrasive blasting to remove old paint and a cleaning of the bridge. Once that is complete the paint application will begin. It will be a three-coat process with a primer coat, an intermediate coat and a final coat. The color of the paint will be a close match to the current color of blue.
The project is anticipating starting in mid-April 2005 and expects to be completed by September 30, 2005.
The contractor will have a temporary traffic signal system and flaggers to control traffic during the project. Pedestrians will have safe passage across the bridge and one 12-foot lane will be maintained for vehicles at all times. Motorists and pedestrians should be aware of signage, signals and lane closures during this project. New Castle Pike, underneath the bridge will be closed during the painting project. Local traffic should follow the detour signs . There will be no lane closures during the following holidays:
Memorial Day, May 27th- May 30th
4th of July, July 1st-July 4th
Labor Day, September 2nd – September 5th
Scott Pennington will be the Resident Engineer for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound and fiscally responsible transportation system that promotes economic growth and enhances the quality of life in Kentucky.
