Covington, Ky. (July 10, 2007) – Today the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet replaced speed limit signs with a 70 MPH decal on rural sections of interstates and parkways.  There are close to 500 signs that will be transitioned to the new speed limit.

In KYTC District 6 crews began the switch this morning at 8:30 and will be out working until all of the signs are complete.  In all there are 40 signs that will show the new interstate speed limit.

Nancy Wood, KYTC District 6 spokesperson said, “The 70 MPH signs will be seen on the more rural sections in our district area.”  She continued by saying,”The more urban sections will remain at their current speed which is deemed safer for the more congested areas.”   

That means that I-75 from the Ohio River to the I-275/I-75 interchange in Erlanger will be 55 MPH.  From Erlanger to the US 42/Florence Exit 180 will be 65 MPH.  The new 70 MPH section will begin just south of the US 42/Florence Exit and will continue to Lexington on I-75 and on I-71 to the outside of the Louisville area.

Motorists should also be aware that there are currently two construction projects in which the speed limit will reduce in the workzone to 60 MPH.  One of the projects is widening I-75 to three lanes in Grant County just south of Dry Ridge and will continue south toward the Scott County line.  The other project is on I-71 near Sparta, Kentucky.  The speed limit will also be posting 60 MPH throughout this 3.2 mile section of interstate.
