Governor Fletcher & Transportation Cabinet Award $1,306,432 in Highway Contracts in Jefferson County

Louisville, KY – (August 26, 2005) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is working to upgrade the highway network in Jefferson County. Three contracts, totaling $1,306,432, have been approved by the cabinet.

"Our highway system is the driving force behind Kentucky’s economic prosperity and flourishing commerce," said Governor Ernie Fletcher. "These projects are an example of our continuing work to provide a safe and reliable transportation system throughout the commonwealth."

Left turn lanes will be constructed on all approaches at the intersection of Upper Hunters Trance and Graston Avenue. Garrison Construction Company, Inc. was awarded the low bid contract in the amount of $212,748.

A second contract was awarded for the resurfacing of various sections of KY 61 in downtown Louisville. Brandeis Street (KY 61) will be resurfaced from Arthur Street to Preston Street. Arthur Street (KY 61) will be resurfaced from I-65 to Brandeis Street. Jackson Street (KY 61) will be resurfaced from Preston Street to Main Street. Preston Street (KY 61) will be resurfaced from I-65 to Main Street. Flynn Brothers Contracting Inc. was awarded the low bid for this contract in the amount of $443,387.

A third contract was awarded for the resurfacing of various sections of US 31W in downtown Louisville. Dumesnil Street (US 31W) will be resurfaced from 22nd Street to West Broadway. 22nd Street (US 31W) will be resurfaced from Dumesnil Street to Main Street. 21st Street (US 31W) will be resurfaced from West Broadway to West Market Street. Market Street (US 31W) will be resurfaced from 21st Street to 2nd Street. Flynn Brothers Contracting Inc. was awarded the low bid for this contract in the amount of $650,297.

Jefferson County is one of eight counties in District 5. Approximately $3.6 million has been awarded for projects in District 5 during the latest round of contract approvals. Statewide, more than $110 million worth of projects have recently been authorized.

"These maintenance, upgrades and new road projects reflect our commitment to the traveling public," said acting Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert. "Kentucky’s motorists can rest assured that they are driving on safe, reliable roads."

Locally, work is expected to begin in the near future and the anticipated completion date is December 2005. Construction activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
