Revised Schedule for Interstate 65 Rehabilitation

Louisville, KY – (September 13, 2006) – In an effort to improve traffic flow in and around downtown Louisville during upcoming community events, the Department of Highways and Gohmann Asphalt and Construction are working together to revise the Interstate 65 Rehabilitation construction schedule.

Over the past few days, we have worked with many different organizations and event planners to schedule our paving around community events so that there would be the least amount of impact possible,” said Chief District Engineer Barry Sanders.  “Our goal is to provide a smooth driving surface to motorists with minimal disruption.”

Asphalt pavement rehabilitation is being performed on 5 miles of Interstate 65 in Jefferson County between Interstate 64 and Phillips Lane (mile point 136.4 to 131.2).  An asphalt waterproofing membrane will be applied to the bridge decks in “hospital curve” and new guardrail will be installed the entire length of the project.  During the first weekend of construction, the contractor was able to pave northbound Interstate 65 between Phillips Lane and Chestnut Street.  The roadway was re-opened at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 10.

As part of the revised schedule, southbound Interstate 65 will be closed between Interstate 64 and Crittenden Drive beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 16, 2006.  The entrance and exit ramps at Crittenden Drive and I-65 will remain open to facilitate the flow of traffic going to and from the University of Louisville vs. University of Miami Florida football games.  Two hours after the game ends, southbound Interstate 65 between Crittenden Drive and the Watterson Expressway (I-264) will be closed as well.  This complete closure of I-65 between I-64 and the Watterson Expressway will remain in place until 5:00 a.m. on Monday, September 18, 2006.

All other weekend closures of Interstate 65 will be in one direction between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and Interstate 64 from 8:00 p.m. on Friday until 5:00 a.m. on Monday per the following schedule:

  • Northbound Interstate 65 closed Friday, September 22 thru Monday, September 25
  • Southbound Interstate 65 closed Friday, September 29 thru Monday, October 2
  • Southbound Interstate 65 closed Friday, October 20 thru Monday, October 23

During the southbound weekend closures, through traffic coming from the Indianapolis area should follow the signed detour via I-265, I-64 and I-264 and reconnecting with I-65 at I-264.  Local traffic in southern Indiana can follow the signed detour via westbound I-64 and I-264.

During the northbound weekend closures, motorists should follow the signed detour via westbound I-264 and eastbound I-64 reconnecting with north I-65 at the John F. Kennedy Bridge.
