U.S. 31W safety enhancement project nears completion
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (Sept. 29, 2010) — A project to enhance safety and access management on a busy Radcliff highway is nearing completion.
Construction crews have been working on U.S. 31W just north of the KY 313 intersection to provide safer access to and from a cluster of businesses, including McDonald’s, on the eastern side of the highway.
“We have had an unacceptable number of serious and fatal crashes in that area due to traffic crossing the busy highway,” said Patty Dunaway, chief district engineer for the Elizabethtown highway district. “Our designers developed a traffic management plan that addresses these safety issues.”
A raised median was installed to prevent traffic from crossing U.S. 31W. All traffic exiting from the business access drive must head north on U.S. 31W; traffic is not permitted to make left turns from the business area.
Traffic flowing from the business area can use a newly constructed u-turn lane from northbound U.S. 31W to access the southbound lanes. Motorists on southbound U.S. 31W will access the area by making a u-turn at the KY 313 intersection onto northbound U.S. 31W.
“Our objective was to cut down the number of dangerous cross-traffic movements that were occurring,” Dunaway said. “We hope this will be a life-saving solution to a deadly problem.”
