ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (June 18, 2010) — Construction on the Rineyville roundabout, at the intersection of KY 1600 and KY 220, will require the closure of KY 220 at the south end of Thompson Road beginning Tuesday, June 22, until the project is completed.

Motorists traveling KY 220 north of the project can detour to KY 1600 via KY 447 and KY 2802. Traffic along KY 1600 will be maintained during the project.

The $488,000 construction contract was awarded to Louisville Paving Co. and is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Transportation Cabinet engineers expect the roundabout to open in September.

Roundabouts, unlike conventional intersections with traffic signals or stop signs, allow vehicles to flow through a traffic circle with minimal stopping. Benefits include reduced congestion and greater safety, generally at less cost.

Information about roundabouts and how to appropriately drive through them, including a video tutorial, is available online at http://transportation.ky.gov/D4/Roundabout.html.
