Governor, Transportation Cabinet award $2.6 million highway contract for Letcher County
LETCHER COUNTY—Monday, September 26, 2005—The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is working to upgrade the highway network in Letcher County. A contract in the amount of $2,666,903.50 has been approved by the Cabinet.
“We want Kentuckians and visitors alike to know that whenever you drive and wherever you drive in this Commonwealth, you can count of safe, dependable roads,” said Acting Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert. “As we evaluate projects, safety, reliability, and economic development are at the top of the list.”
The contract is for asphalt surfacing and guardrail on Whitesburg Road from KY 160/KY 1811 via KY 15 and KY 7 extending north to Rockhouse Creek Bridge. The low bid was submitted by Mountain Enterprises of Lexington.
Letcher County is one of seven counties in Highway District 12. Approximately $4.6 million has been awarded for projects in District 12 during the latest round of contract approvals. Statewide, more than $91 million in projects has recently been authorized, which brings the total amount of contracts this year to more than $521 million.
“Here in Kentucky we have embraced a philosophy that relies on a solid transportation system as the underpinning for flourishing commerce,” said Governor Ernie Fletcher. “Highway projects such as these are shining examples of our commitment to those principles.”
Locally, work is expected to being in the near future and the anticipated completion date is November 30. Construction activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
