Safer turns are now possible for motorists traveling the Carnell Sprinkles Bypass (KY 3041) in Corbin.  The Transportation Cabinet’s District 11 Office in Manchester has completed construction of turn lanes located at the Eastern Kentucky University Campus, TECO Coal and CTA Acoustics.  The turn lanes were installed to improve safety and reduce congestion as this area expands.

“These turn lanes are a great asset to businesses and motorists traveling this corridor,” said Bill Nighbert, Acting Transportation Secretary.  “These are the type of safety projects the Transportation Cabinet like to do for motorists using our roadways.”

“Using state forces and personnel to perform the labor, projects such as these can be accomplished with limited funding,” said Greene Keith, Chief District Engineer.  Total funding for this project was approximately $400,000.

M and D General Contractors, Inc., with assistance from the Knox and Whitley County Maintenance Crews, performed the excavation and grade work.   Elmo Greer and Sons, LLC placed the asphalt pavement and the D-11 traffic crew did an excellent job installing pavement markings on the roadway.

Motorists traveling this corridor will enjoy the benefits of improved safety with the turn lanes in place.  These enhancements allow for a safer, more efficient traffic flow and aid in alleviating traffic congestion while accommodating Corbin’s expanding industrial park traffic and increasing economic development opportunities for this area.
