Two safety projects completed in Laurel County
As part of the vision of Governor Ernie Fletcher and acting Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert to provide a safe and reliable transportation system for all Kentuckians, work has been completed on two safety improvement projects in Laurel County.
KY 2069 commonly known as Middleground Way is much safer for motorists with the completion of a curve realignment, located at Milepoint .400 to .480 and resulting in the roadway being widened, making travel much safer for motorists who use this route on a daily basis. This section of road was closed to all traffic for approximately 6 weeks during construction and motorists had to use alternate routes to travel. Bluegrass Contracting, Inc. began construction to realign the curve on October 3, 2005. Mr. Mark Johnson, owner, told District 11’s Transportation Chief District Engineer, Greene L. Keith, “He especially wanted to thank the adjoining property owners for being the most cooperative on any project he had performed for the Cabinet”.
KY 80 at the intersection of Sally’s Branch Road has also undergone a major realignment which widened the intersection, making it much safer for motorists. Horne and Tramel Construction Co. LLC began construction of the new entrance on September 6, 2005. Trucks traveling to businesses located on Sally’s Branch Road and motorists who use this road daily have much better access and greater sight distance with the completion of this project.
These projects were funded by federal HES (hazard elimination safety) money for safety projects.
