The Transportation Cabinet Announces Plan to Enhance Safety for Laurel River Bridge on KY 1803
As part of the vision of Governor Ernie Fletcher and acting Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert to provide a safe and reliable transportation system for all Kentuckians, work will begin on a $100,000 safety improvement project on KY 1803 in Laurel County. Blackwater Road will be getting a bridge replaced soon, the old structure located at Milepoint 3.5 is scheduled to be removed and a new bridge and approaches constructed. Removal of the Laurel River Bridge by the laurel county maintenance crew is scheduled to begin, Tuesday, September 6, 2005.
The bridge is located .8 M from the Jct. of KY 80, in the Blackwater Community. Beginning at 8:00 AM, removal of existing structure and footings will require excavation of rock and new footers being poured. A pre-cast bridge will be set, backfilled, embankment placed and paved to complete the structure. Approaches will be repaved and guardrail added.
A construction estimate for the new structure was $150,000. With maintenance personnel performing the work, the Transportation Cabinet will
save approximately $50,000 from the original estimate. The cost for the new structure will be approximately $100,000 ($58,000 for the pre-cast bridge).
Road will be closed, local traffic only, for approximately two weeks as construction will be dependent on weather conditions. Motorists are urged to use caution in the work area and be alert for workers, equipment that may block the roadway and other items of concern in work zones. The Transportation Cabinet urges motorists to be alert to warning signs and cautious of work zone speed limits where applicable.
Additional improvements for sight distance at the Jct. of KY 80 and 1803 will consist of embankment removal.
