JACKSON, KY – (June 20, 2005) -- On June 1, acting Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert signed an official order naming the bridge on KY 15 (the Johnny Cox All-American Highway, also known as the Hazard Bypass) crossing KY 451 and Messer Branch the "Julius ‘Jay’ Lasslo" bridge in honor of the longtime civic leader in Hazard and Perry County.

"We are pleased to help honor a much beloved figure in the community such as Jay Lasslo," Nighbert said. "On behalf of Gov. Ernie Fletcher, it’s my privilege to sign the order naming this bridge on a major and heavily traveled highway after such a distinguished gentleman."

Mr. Lasslo is a veteran of World War II. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge but escaped. However, he is probably best known as the voice of the East Kentucky Sports Network. Legions of listeners to radio station WSGS-FM in Hazard are familiar with Mr. Lasslo’s voice, as he has broadcasted hundreds of high school basketball games ranging from regular season competition to district, regional and state tournaments on the East Kentucky Sports Network.

The Perry County Fiscal Court and County Judge-Executive Denny Ray Noble petitioned the Transportation Cabinet to name the bridge in Lasslo’s honor pursuant to Kentucky Revised Statute 177.074. A dedication ceremony was held by the Perry County Fiscal Court on Monday, June 20 at 11 a.m. to note the bridge’s naming for Lasslo.

The Department of Highways will erect signs at the overpass to note the honor.
