Safety improvement project completed on KY 15 in Breathitt County
JACKSON, KY. – (May 23, 2006) -- Work is nearly complete on a $175,000 highway safety improvement project approved by Governor Ernie Fletcher for Breathitt County.
Minor widening, paving and striping are finished on the project to add left turn lanes on KY 15 at its intersection with KY 1098 and KY 1812 near Quicksand. Guardrail will be installed in the next few days.
"KY 15 is one of the busiest highways in eastern Kentucky. It carries a heavy volume of passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle traffic, including coal trucks," Governor Fletcher said. "This project will help prevent accidents on this stretch of road used by Breathitt County residents and out-of-town travelers alike."
"Improving highway safety is a major objective of the Transportation Cabinet under the Fletcher administration, and this project is a prime example of our commitment to this goal," said Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert. "We are pleased to make this improvement for the benefit of Breathitt County residents and all who use this important through route in the mountains."
The $175,000 project will be paid for from Hazard Elimination funds.
Motorists are advised to be alert to the possibility of encountering stopped traffic as the construction wraps up. They are urged to "Drive Smart" and be on the lookout for flaggers, workers, equipment and traffic control devices in the work zone.
