PRESS RELEASE: Governor Fletcher, Transportation Cabinet authorize improvements for Marie Roberts Road in Breathitt County
JACKSON, KY - (May 4, 2006) – Governor Ernie Fletcher and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet are taking action to make an emergency upgrade to a Breathitt County highway. Improvements to Marie Roberts Road totaling $43,454 have been authorized.
"When emergency situations require repairs, it is our goal to make those repairs as quickly as possible," said Bill Nighbert, Transportation Cabinet secretary. "This project should make travel safer for those who use this road each day to get to work or school."
The project involves widening Marie Roberts Road from the entrance to Marie Roberts-Caney Elementary School north toward Lost Creek, a distance of 0.424 miles. The funding provides for grade, drain and high-type surface on this highway, which provides access from KY 15 to the consolidated elementary school serving southern Breathitt County. The condition of the existing roadway and recent accidents have been a concern of parents of students at Marie Roberts-Caney.
"A number of parents recently contacted Governor Fletcher's office about this situation," Secretary Nighbert said. "The governor considers highway safety to be a top priority for his administration, and especially the safety of children traveling to and from school. Once he was made aware of the condition of this road, he made sure that we took action to make improvements that will enhance safety."
The county will be responsible for the work and the cost will be paid from County Road Aid funds.
