JACKSON, KY – (May 16, 2005) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to close KY 7, West Liberty-Sandy Hook Road, just north of West Liberty for at least two days this week for blasting and to remove construction debris from the area.
The closure is near mile marker 1. A new alignment of heavily traveled KY 7 is being built between the route’s intersections with US 460 and KY 519. This represents a $14 million investment in the highway infrastructure of Morgan County and the region.
Transportation Cabinet officials and representatives of the construction company estimate the closure will require at least two days, and possibly three. Weather permitting, the highway will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday, May 18 and 19. Closure may also be necessary on Friday, May 20. Inclement weather may change the planned closure dates.
This closure affects motorists traveling between West Liberty and Morehead, Sandy Hook and Grayson. During the closure, motorists are asked to follow a signed detour via US 460, KY 172 and KY 1161. Northbound KY 7 traffic heading for Morehead will be able to turn back onto KY 7 south from KY 1161 to reach KY 519 north. Southbound KY 519 traffic heading for West Liberty will need to turn onto KY 7 north and reverse the detour route.
Motorists are asked to use caution along the detour route, especially KY 1161, as it is more narrow and crooked than KY 7. Improvements have been made to KY 1161 since it was designated as a detour route back in January. Guardrail has been installed and shoulders have been reinforced to make the detour route safer for a high volume of traffic.
