KY 7 in Morgan County to be closed in construction zone June 27-30
JACKSON, KY – (June 23, 2005) – The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to close KY 7, West Liberty-Sandy Hook Road, just north of West Liberty from Monday, June 27 to Thursday, June 30, as a $14 million construction project continues toward completion.
This closure will allow the contractor to prepare the access point to old KY 7 from the new route, and is required because a portion of the existing highway will be covered by the fill for the approach. The highway will be reopened in time for the Independence Day holiday weekend.
The road will be closed near mile marker 1, north of the Morehead State University center. A new alignment of heavily traveled KY 7 is being built between West Liberty and KY 519. This project represents a $14 million investment in the highway infrastructure of Morgan County and the region.
This closure affects motorists traveling between West Liberty and Morehead, Sandy Hook and Grayson. During the closure, motorists are asked to follow a signed detour via US 460, KY 172 and KY 1161. Northbound KY 7 traffic heading for Morehead can turn back onto KY 7 south from KY 1161 to reach KY 519 north. Southbound KY 519 traffic heading for West Liberty will need to turn onto KY 7 north and reverse the detour route.
Motorists are asked to use caution along the detour route, especially KY 1161, as it is more narrow and crooked than KY 7. Guardrail has been installed and shoulders have been reinforced to make the detour route safer for a high volume of traffic.
Once completed, the new route of KY 7 will make travel from West Liberty to points north faster and safer. It will also improve access to Interstate 64 at Grayson and Morehead.
