JACKSON, KY – (April 19, 2006) – Due to a mudslide, KY 699 in Perry County will be closed indefinitely between mile markers 5 and 6. The closure is located between Leatherwood and Cornettsville, or between KY 463 and KY 7.

The slide appears to have been caused by the breach of a water-filled abandoned underground mine shaft, and was enhanced by this morning's heavy rain. The depth of the slide approaches 12 feet in some spots, and mud continues to move down the hillside toward the highway even as crews work to remove the existing blockage.

No marked detour has been established. Passenger vehicles may use KY 699 and KY 80 through Leslie County to Hazard; or KY 463, KY 160 and either KY 1103 or KY 588 through Letcher County to KY 7 near the Letcher-Perry County line. Motorists on these roads are asked to use caution, as they are likely to experience heavier than normal traffic and encounter drivers unfamiliar with the alternate routes.
