JACKSON, KY – (April 21, 2006) – KY 699 remains closed between mile markers 5 and 6 in Perry County, due to a massive mudslide. This location is between Leatherwood and Cornettsville, or between KY 463 and KY 7. The length of time the road will remain closed is still undetermined.

No marked detour has been established. Passenger vehicles may use KY 699 and KY 80 through Leslie County to Hazard; or KY 463, KY 160 and either KY 1103 or KY 588 through Letcher County to reach KY 7 near the Letcher-Perry County line. Motorists on these roads are asked to use caution, as they are likely to experience heavier than normal traffic and encounter drivers unfamiliar with the alternate routes.

In addition, maintenance work on KY 699 in Leslie County will reduce that road to one lane on Tuesday, April 25 between mile markers 5 and 6 for culvert replacement. Motorists in that area will experience long delays.

An advisory will be issued when KY 699 in Perry County is reopened to traffic.

Any media inquiries about the slide itself, including its cause and the abatement efforts, should be directed to Mark York in the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet, at (502) 564-3350 (office) or (502) 330-0332 (cell).
