JACKSON, KY – (Sept. 23, 2005) -- As part of a construction project to repair the Glomawr Bridge crossing the North Fork of the Kentucky River, the Kentucky Department of Highways will close KY 451, Old Hazard-Whitesburg Road, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 4. The closure is located at milepoint 0.01 in Perry County just north of the KY 15 intersection, south of Hazard, and will remain in effect for approximately three weeks.

During the closure, the open metal grate deck of this bridge will be replaced. The contractor has 20 calendar days, including weekends, to complete the project once work begins.

While the bridge is closed, traffic can use KY 15 as a detour route. The Department of Highways plans to place electronic message boards in the vicinity to alert motorists to the closure prior to the effective date.

Judy C. Harp Co., Inc., is performing the work at a cost of $199,452.72.

"This project is part of the ongoing commitment of the administration of Governor Ernie Fletcher to provide a safe network of roads for Kentucky motorists," said Linda Wagner-Justice, chief district engineer for the Department of Highways District 10, which includes Perry County. "We apologize for the inconvenience of the road closure, but we are pleased to make this improvement for the benefit of drivers in Perry County."
