JACKSON, KY. – (May 23, 2006) -- Motorists on KY 15 north of Hazard may experience delays for the next month as work begins on a safety improvement project.

A deceleration and turning lane will be added to northbound KY 15 at the entrance to Perry County Park Road. Following the excavation work necessary to complete that component of the project, the median traffic islands along that section of KY 15 between Perry County Park Road and the Hazard Bypass (Johnny Cox All-American Drive) will be removed and new drainage pipes installed. This will allow for a center left turn lane to be installed. This project will involve minor widening of KY 15, along with paving and striping to accommodate the new turn lanes. The work is expected to take approximately 30 days, weather permitting.

Some of the work, including paving, will be done at night due to heavy traffic volumes in the area. This portion of KY 15 carries more than 32,000 vehicles per day, which is the heaviest traffic volume of any highway in the 10-county Department of Highways District 10 area.

Motorists are advised to be alert to the possibility of encountering stopped traffic during the construction. They are urged to "Drive Smart" and be on the lookout for flaggers, workers, equipment and traffic control devices as the work progresses.
