TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Drivers alerted to changing traffic patterns at KY 15-KY 1812 intersection at Vancleve in Breathitt County
JACKSON, KY – (March 3, 2006) -- Drivers who use KY 15 and KY 1812 in the Vancleve area of Breathitt County should be aware of changing traffic patterns at this intersection due to ongoing construction on the $36 million KY 15 relocation project.
A temporary bridge to carry KY 1812 across Little Frozen Creek will open to traffic on Wednesday, March 8. This bridge will connect KY 1812 to KY 15, south of the existing intersection of KY 15 and KY 205, and it will replace the existing bridge that connects KY 1812 directly to KY 205.
In preparation for this traffic pattern shift, lanes will be restriped on KY 15 to allow for a left-turn storage lane from southbound KY 15 to the temporary KY 1812 bridge. These lane marking changes will be made on Monday and Tuesday, March 6 and 7. Drivers should use caution in this area while the old lane markings are removed and new ones are established.
The temporary bridge has been located to accommodate work on the permanent structure for the bridge that will carry the new four-lane KY 15 in this area. Because of this, the angle of the relocated KY 15-KY 1812 intersection may create problems for longer vehicles, such as school buses and tractor-trailers, that attempt to turn right from northbound KY 15 to southbound KY 1812.
There will be no changes to the existing KY 15-KY 205 intersection. Traffic patterns at that intersection changed several weeks ago due to the ongoing construction.
The speed limit on KY 15 in the work zone area has been reduced to 45 mph. Motorists should "Drive Smart" in this work zone and be alert for workers and construction vehicles.
Motorists may encounter periodic delays in this area as construction progresses on the $36 million project to relocate KY 15 to a four-lane facility. Drivers should plan their trips accordingly.
Inclement weather next week may delay the restriping work and the traffic pattern change.
