JACKSON, KY – (April 25, 2005) -- Orange "Road Work Ahead" signs are in place, and construction is about to begin on several projects to improve the state’s transportation network in Estill County.

Hinkle Contracting Corp. is set to start work this week on 10 separate paving projects totaling 22.65 miles. The work was awarded in three contracts totaling more than $1.3 million. When the $225,000 recently authorized for construction of a center turn lane on KY 52 in West Irvine is included, this represents an investment of more than $1.5 million in the transportation infrastructure of Estill County.

"This is part of the vision of Governor Ernie Fletcher and Acting Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert to provide a safe and reliable transportation system for all Kentuckians," said Linda Wagner-Justice, chief district engineer for District 10 of the Department of Highways. "This improvement will help ensure better, safer traveling for all drivers who use these roads."

The following roads will be resurfaced in the coming weeks:

  • KY 52, Irvine-Richmond Road, 0.83 miles between KY 3327 and KY 499. A center turn lane will also be added to this busy highway in the West Irvine area as part of this project.
  • KY 89, Irvine-Winchester Road, 1.29 miles between KY 82 and Fox Road.
  • KY 89, Irvine-Winchester Road, 5.18 miles between KY 2461 (Broadway in Irvine) and KY 794.
  • KY 2455, Rice Street in Irvine, 0.22 miles between KY 89 and Elizabeth Street.
  • KY 52, Irvine-Beattyville Road, 3.83 miles between KY 1182 and the Lee County Line. Traffic counting inductance loops will also be installed at milepoint 19.03.
  • KY 1398, Pryse-Texola Road, 2.40 miles from the beginning of state maintenance to KY 1571.
  • KY 1571, River Road, 2.51 miles between the railroad crossing at Millers Creek to KY 52.
  • KY 851, Ola-Leighton Road, 2.68 miles between KY 3329 and KY 89.
  • KY 1182, Cobhill Road, 0.90 miles from Watson Ridge Road extending southeasterly.
  • KY 1352, Old Irvine-Richmond Road, 2,81 miles from KY 52 near the Madison County line looping back to KY 52 near Winston.

Travel all across the county will be impacted by the work, including traffic going from Irvine to Richmond, Winchester and Beattyville and vice versa. During the resurfacing and widening work on KY 52, motorists may wish to use KY 89 (Winchester Road) and KY 499 (the Joseph Proctor Bypass) as an alternate route.

Motorists are urged to watch out for flaggers, workers and equipment during the work period. They are also reminded to slow down in construction zones, to obey any posted speed limit reductions, and to pay attention to any traffic control devices such as cones, barrels or barriers they may encounter in the work area. There may be delays in the work area, so drivers should plan their trips accordingly.
