JACKSON, Ky. – (June 8, 2007) – In keeping with their goal to provide a safe and reliable transportation system, Governor Ernie Fletcher and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet have awarded a contract for repairs totaling nearly $4.6 million on 11 bridges along the KY 15 corridor in Breathitt, Knott and Perry counties.

The contract is for cleaning, painting and minor repairs of one bridge in Breathitt County, eight bridges in Perry County and two bridges in Knott County along KY 15 between Vancleve and Whitesburg.

“My administration is committed to providing smooth, safe highways for Kentuckians,” Governor Fletcher said.  “KY 15 is a major thoroughfare for eastern Kentucky and it is vital that we keep the bridges along this busy highway in good repair. By investing in this and similar maintenance and repair projects, we can ensure that this road adequately serves the public for years to come.”

North Star Painting Company, Inc., was awarded the low-bid contract for $4,596,480.  The scheduled completion date for all 11 bridges is Aug. 31, 2008.

“The Fletcher administration continues to make road improvements a priority,” Transportation Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert said. “Good roads mean safer roads for Kentucky drivers. Improving driver safety and strengthening our state’s vital infrastructure are top priorities for Governor Fletcher as he fulfills his promises to Kentuckians.”

Construction activities are scheduled on a tentative basis and are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Motorists are asked to “Drive Smart” in work zones and be aware of workers, traffic control devices and construction equipment when traveling in areas where projects are ongoing.
