JACKSON, KY – (Sept. 1, 2005) -- Drivers in Breathitt County are being cautioned to drive safely through two areas of the county where traffic patterns have changed due to construction efforts.

Today, the Transportation Cabinet reopened KY 1812 near Vancleve. This road had been closed since June due to construction of the new four-lane KY 15. The alignment of the road has changed in the vicinity of the bridge that will carry new KY 15 across KY 1812 and Frozen Creek. There has also been a traffic pattern change north of Hoover Bridge Road, where KY 1812 will now actually be using part of the new KY 15 alignment.

Also today, officials shifted traffic on KY 30 near Quicksand to a new alignment as part of a project to improve sight distances at the intersection of KY 30 and KY 15 and to add turning lanes on KY 15.

Drivers are reminded that both these areas are in construction zones. While work along KY 1812 near Vancleve will continue for several more months, the project on KY 15 and KY 30 near Quicksand should be completed in the next few weeks. Motorists are asked to "Drive Smart" and be alert for flaggers, workers and equipment in the work zone. They are also reminded to slow down in construction zones, to obey any posted speed limit reductions, and to pay attention to any traffic control devices such as cones, barrels or barriers they may encounter in the work area. There may be delays in the work area, so drivers should plan their trips accordingly.
