Weight Limit Restrictions Placed on

U.S. 60 Green River Bridge at Spottsville

Madisonville, KY --  The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Department of Highways  has placed a 15 ton (30,000 pound) weight restriction on the U.S. 60 Green River Bridge at Spottsville in Henderson County.  The weight restriction was posted after inspectors spent three days evaluating the bridge earlier this week.

“We found some deterioration at the ends of the stringers which help stabilize the deck sections,” said Kentucky Department of Highways District Two Bridge Inspector Denny Larkin. “The deterioration is mainly in the form of rusted areas where the stringers connect to the main bridge substructure.”

Chief District Engineer Ted Merryman says bridge engineers will need about two weeks to evaluate the inspection report, determine the extent of repairs needed, and design a solution.

“We recognize that this bridge provides an important link between Henderson and Owensboro.  We will make every effort to expedite the planning, design and execution of repairs to minimize the amount of time the weight restriction is in place,” Merryman said.

Merryman has already sent a request to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet headquarters staff in Frankfort asking that repairs be put on a fast track.

The U.S. 60 Bridge at Spottsville carries approximately 4100 vehicles a day across the Green River at mile point 19.3 in Henderson County between Henderson and Owensboro.

“Inspections are important to assure that all of these bridges remain safe for travel,” Larkin said.  “While the deterioration on the stringers is cause for concern, it is something that can be repaired.”

Larkin says while repairs are being planned he is alerting area farmers and industries of the weight restriction.

“We recognize that the weight limit will cause a hardship on trucks that regularly travel U.S. 60,” Larkin said.  “Coming in the middle of fall harvest season, it is likely to be especially troublesome to area farmers.  We’ve contacted some area industries to alert their transportation people to tell truckers to avoid the bridge until repairs can be completed.”

Trucks over 30,000 pounds will be required to seek an alternate route via the Audubon Parkway.  The Spottsville Bridge was opened to traffic in December 1931.
