FRANKFORT, Ky., July 28, 2004 -- Chief Justice of Kentucky Joseph E. Lambert has recognized 55 Kentucky elementary and high school teachers for their efforts to promote citizenship and an appreciation for the U.S. Constitution. The 2004 We the People … The Citizen and the Constitution Award of Achievement is presented annually to those who promote an understanding among Kentucky's youth for the principles of our constitutional democracy.

"The U.S. Constitution has become a living document for students across Kentucky, thanks to the many teachers who make civic education a priority," said Rachel Bingham, Law Related Education program supervisor for the Administrative Office of the Courts in Frankfort, which administers the program for the Commonwealth. "We want to honor these teachers for being strong advocates for the constitutional rights of all Americans."

We the People … The Citizen and the Constitution is a nationally acclaimed program that focuses on the history and principles of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights for upper elementary, middle and high school students. The We the People … curriculum enhances student understanding of American democracy and the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The program was developed by the Center for Civic Education in Calabasas, Calif.

The Administrative Office of the Courts is the administrative arm of the Kentucky Court of Justice and supports the activities of more than 3,400 court system employees, including the elected offices of justices, judges and circuit court clerks. The AOC also executes the Judicial Branch budget.
