Kentucky Arts Council Supports Arts in Schools through Artist Residencies
FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Kentucky Arts Council has awarded $29,700 in Teacher Initiated Program grants for short-term artist residencies in 18 counties, scheduled to take place in the fall of 2008. These grants support professional artists an opportunity to demonstrate their art form and provide students and teachers repeated hands-on experiences in the making of art. Artists also collaborate with teachers to design and implement innovative programs that provide the tools to continue utilizing art across the curriculum after the residency is completed.
Residencies vary widely, depending on the planning of the teacher and the artist or artists hired for the residency. One example at a middle school consists of collecting oral histories and then writing and performing a play based on those oral histories. Another infuses dance into the social studies curriculum through students doing research of historical periods of their choosing, creatively writing based on that research and then culminating in creating and performing an original dance based on those writings.
"The Kentucky Arts Council strongly supports arts in education," says Lori Meadows, executive director of the Kentucky Arts Council. "The Teacher Initiated Program has a powerful impact on the students we are able to reach with our limited resources."
The grant amounts are based on the length of the residencies which can be for one to four weeks. The grants awards are $540, $1,080, $1,620 and $2,160, respectively. Artists are selected by the schools from the Kentucky Arts Council's Arts Education Roster of Artists, which is available at http://artistdirectory.ky.gov/aer/.
For more information about the Teacher Initiated Program, contact Program Branch Manager Chris Cathers at (502) 564-3757 ext. 488 or christopher.cathers@ky.gov. The next application deadline is October 15, 2008 for residencies occurring in the spring of 2009. Current guidelines are available at http://artscouncil.ky.gov/guide/prog6/tip_guid.htm
The Kentucky Arts Council is a state agency in the Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet that creates opportunities for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky State Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
