FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Gateway Regional Arts Center in Mount Sterling will host the Kentucky Arts Council's "Makings of a Master" exhibit, a celebration of Kentucky Folk Art Apprenticeships, from Aug. 1-29.

Visitors to the "Makings of a Master" exhibit will explore the relationship between master and apprentice through artifacts, videos and activities, as well as live performances and demonstrations.

"Kentucky is home to a wide variety of highly accomplished master artists who, for generations, have been willing to share their knowledge with less experienced artists for the purpose of conserving art forms important to Kentucky culture," said Lori Meadows, arts council executive director. "This exhibit is a celebration of their contributions to the arts in the Commonwealth."

There will be an opening reception at the Gateway Regional Arts Center from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3. Jazz pianist Elise Melrood, who last year completed a folk art apprenticeship with master pianist and Grammy award winner Jay Flippin, will play a short concert and discuss her apprenticeship at 4:30 p.m.

Since 1993, the Kentucky Arts Council has supported masters and apprentices of community-based art forms with the Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program. Artists include traditional musicians, dancers, blacksmiths, weavers, marble makers, chair makers, quilters, storytellers and more.

The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, creates opportunities for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.
