Kentucky Crafted: The Market also features the literary arts

FRANKFORT, Ky. — Lexington’s Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, in partnership with the Kentucky Arts Council, will present children’s activities, writers’ workshops, a panel discussion on publishing and readings by Kentucky’s past poets laureate, at Kentucky Crafted: The Market. The annual award-winning arts marketplace returns to Kentucky Exposition Center, South Wing B, Louisville, Ky., with literary activities featured on Saturday, March 19, 2011.

The children’s activities include decorating bookmarks and binding mini-journals. The activities are free with paid admission to The Market or any of the writers’ workshops.

Writers’ workshop topics are Storytelling and Poetry with Kathleen Driskell, Something Has to Happen with Mary Ann Taylor-Hall and Life Writing with Leatha Kendrick.

Early registration by March 11 is $20 per session; after that, $30. Registration includes free admission to Kentucky Crafted the Market. To register, go to http://artscouncil.ky.gov/forms/Mkt2011WritersReg.htm.

Carnegie Center marketing and communications director Jessica Mohler will moderate a panel discussion with Ashley Runyon, University Press of Kentucky; Sarah Gorham, Sarabande Books; and Gray Zeitz, Larkspur Press.

Carnegie Center Executive Director Jan Isenhour will present Kentucky Poet Laureate Maureen Morehead and three past poets laureate who will give readings of their work: Richard Taylor, Joe Survant and Gurney Norman.

The publishing panel and the poet laureate readings are free.

Kentucky Crafted: The Market offers buyers from galleries, shops and online retail venues across the nation the opportunity to select products from more than 200 exhibitors of fine art and craft, books, CDs, DVDs and specialty foods. The Market is open exclusively to the trade on March 17 and 18.

On March 19 and 20, the marketplace opens to the public. In addition to shopping for fine art and craft, visitors can enjoy musical performances, sample regional food products, meet Kentucky authors and explore Kentucky traditions through special exhibits.

Kentucky Crafted: The Market is produced by the Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency that creates opportunities for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.
