FRANKFORT, Ky. — Visitors going to the Capitol for the Governor's Derby Celebration will have an opportunity to view an exhibition of Kentucky-themed art and photography, "Kentucky Visions at the Capitol," coordinated by the Kentucky Arts Council on behalf of Gov. Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear.

"We have a wealth of artistic talent in Kentucky, and Derby Day is the perfect day to show it off in our state Capitol," said First Lady Beshear.

The artwork has been produced by Kentucky artists from across the state who responded to an open call to artists in early April.  Many works are available for purchase.  For more information about featured artists or to purchase artwork, contact Rachel Rasnick, Kentucky Arts Council at (502) 564-2757 ext. 492, (888) 833-2787 toll- free or rachel.rasnick@ky.gov.

The traditional Governor’s Derby Celebration will be on the state Capitol grounds from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. E.D.T., Saturday, May 2, 2009, and is open to the public.  Each year thousands of people participate in this Derby festivity and browse the grounds to experience hot air balloon rides (weather permitting), entertainment, artisan booths and other activities.  Breakfast will be served at a nominal cost. Continuous shuttle service will be available beginning at 7:45 a.m. from the parking area located at Juniper Hill Park to the Floral Clock at the Capitol. Shuttles will also be available from the Floral Clock to downtown Frankfort. For more information, go to www.governor.ky.gov/derbycelebration.

The Kentucky Arts Council is a state agency in the Tourism Arts and Heritage Cabinet that creates opportunities for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.
