Teachers working full time in Kentucky could save big on their student loans from The Student Loan Peoplesm with Best in Class benefits.
All teachers, counselors and librarians in certified Kentucky schools are eligible for interest forgiveness each year. Teachers who are members of a minority group and certified teachers of math, science, special education, foreign language and English as a second language may also qualify for forgiveness of student loan principal up to $10,000 per year.
The benefits apply to Federal Stafford, Federal PLUS and some Federal Consolidation Loans from The Student Loan People, the state’s only nonprofit student loan provider. The popular program has already saved Kentucky teachers more than $24.2 million in student loan payments.
Teachers are eligible to apply for these benefits each spring. The application may be printed from studentloanpeople.com. The deadline for applications is usually early May. Borrowers who take advantage of Best in Class should consult a tax adviser about possible tax consequences.
