Statewide historic preservation awards honor projects, service
29th Annual Ida Lee Willis Memorial Foundation Preservation Awards handed out today in Louisville
FRANKFORT, Ky. – Former Kentucky Heritage Council executive director and state historic preservation officer David L. Morgan of Washington, D.C. was honored today as recipient of the Ida Lee Willis Memorial Preservation Award, given annually for excellence in the preservation of Kentucky’s historic and cultural resources. The award was the highest honor given during the 29th Annual Ida Lee Willis Memorial Foundation Preservation Awards ceremony, which took place at the Henry Clay Hotel in downtown Louisville – a recently restored building which was also honored with a Preservation Project Award.
Morgan was cited for 22 years of service as Kentucky state historic preservation officer, serving from 1984 through this past December, and for the strong foundation of preservation achievements during his tenure. Other awards were presented in two categories:
Preservation Project Awards recognize outstanding examples of restoration or rehabilitation of historic buildings, or other types of projects that have had a positive impact on Kentucky’s built environment. Winners are:
· Henry Clay Hotel, Louisville, presented to William Weyland and Off Broadway Owner, LLC
· Bourbon County Courthouse dome, Paris, presented to Bourbon County Fiscal Court
· Howard-Hardy House, 429 S. 2nd Street, Louisville, presented to Cathedral Commons Development, LLC
Service to Preservation Awards honor those who have furthered historic preservation activities or have had a positive impact in their communities, including individuals, organizations, public officials, financial institutions, news media, and/or volunteers. Winners are:
· Yvonne Giles of Lexington
· City of Bardstown / Bardstown Historical Review Board
· State Representative Arnold Simpson (D-65) of Covington
Ida Lee Willis Memorial Foundation Preservation Awards are presented to individuals and organizations who have demonstrated an understanding of and an appreciation for the value of preserving and reusing Kentucky’s historic and prehistoric resources, whether through the restoration of an important structure or community resource or through a lifetime commitment to encouraging and promoting historic preservation.
The foundation was chartered in 1979 to honor Ida Lee Willis, first executive director of the Kentucky Heritage Council / State Historic Preservation Office (formerly the Kentucky Heritage Commission) and widow of former Governor Simeon Willis.
The awards program also honored winners from the 2007 Statewide Photo-Essay Competition, open to all Kentucky students and sponsored by Preservation Kentucky and the Kentucky Heritage Council.
